Civil Services Examination is conducted by UPSC, New Delhi. It consists of 3 stages. The first stage is the Civil Services Preliminary Examination (UPSC Prelims). It consists of two papers, of objective type (MCQs).
The first Prelims paper is GS (General Studies) and the second paper is CSAT. While for CSAT, the syllabus includes Maths, Reasoning, Comprehension, inter personal skills and decision making. CSAT is of qualifying nature. Please note, that it is compulsory to clear UPSC Prelims in order to appear for the next stage i.e UPSC Mains.
This stage acts as a screening test only. The marks obtained in the UPSC Prelims are not counted for determining the final order of merit after UPSC Mains. Also, the number of candidates to be admitted in UPSC Mains are about 12 to 13 times the total number of approximate vacancies to be filled in that particular year. For example, in the year 2017, 980 vacancies were there in UPSC, so approximately you can estimate the number of candidates termed as qualified for UPSC Mains that year. There are in total of 6 attempts for General Category students. Even if you appear for UPSC Prelims after your graduation, and are unable to clear it, still your attempt would be counted.
