The officers of the All India Services are placed in a cadre state or a set of states in which they will work. Upon the completion of certain eligibility criteria, an officer may also be placed on central deputation during their course of service.
The presently existing 26 cadres have been divided into five zones in the new policy proposed by the ministry of personnel, public grievances, and pensions.
- Zone-I has seven cadres—AGMUT (also known as Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories), Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana.
- Zone-II consists of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
- Zone-III comprises Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam-Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura
- Zone-IV- Nagaland
- Zone-V has Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
- Candidates can be allotted their home cadres on the basis of their preferences, merit and available vacancies in the category.
