After clearing the final exams, the service allocation is done. If you have scored higher marks than the others, you may get to choose between the services. After the allocations are done, LBSNAA( Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration) starts the registration process for the fundamental courses. The fundamental course lasts up to 15 weeks and the candidates are appointed into their respective cadres as probationers for nearly 8 months. They have to return to LBSNAA for another 6 weeks after which they become a qualified officer and thereafter sent to their cadres. After the 7th Pay commission, the basic pay of an entry level IAS officer is Rs. 56,100. There are various allowances also given like that of  Dearness Allowance (DA), Travel Allowance(TA) and House Rent Allowance (HRA) on top of the basic pay.

The person should have completed the age of 21 years and must not be over the age of 32 years (General category ) on August 1 of the year of examination. Given age limits vary with caste reservations: For Other Backward Castes (OBC) , the upper age limit is 35. For Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), the age limit is 37. The upper age limit is flexible with certain persons who are backward but also have other causes such as differently abled.
